We understand that when it comes to hanging curtains, some of you may be a little less confident than others. We are regularly asked for hints and tips on achieving a professional finish so have put together a mini guide to help you get it right first time.

Once you unpack your new curtains, there are several things you need to do before you are ready to hang them. Your curtains will be creased, and whilst most will drop out over time, you can give them a quick iron. Be careful to check the care label first, as some fabrics don’t react well to the heat!  It is often best to iron curtains from the back.

If your curtain has a pencil pleat heading, you must start by knotting together the three rows of string at the top of the heading tape. This will ensure that the string is not pulled through when you create your gather.

To create gather, start by measuring your curtain pole and add 6 inches. Then, half the total number and this is what you must pull your curtains to. Hold all three strings at once and pull as evenly as possible. Before tying the strings to finish, hold the curtain up at the window to check it looks ok.

Thread your curtain hooks into one of the three rows of pockets on the tape. Place hooks in approximately every 4-6 pockets along the tape, making sure they are even. The hooks are then threaded onto your curtain track or pole.

Once hung, you can go about creating the pleats. To do this, push the fabric in between each hook away from the window and hold the pleat with your hand. Repeat this along the width of each curtain and hold in place with a piece of fabric overnight. This will encourage the pleats to stay in place.
