Your top curtain questions answered!

A lot of our customers turn to us to ask questions about their curtains, we thought we’d put together a blog post to answer the most common questions we get asked. If you have any other curtain-related questions, please do get in touch over on Facebook or Twitter and we’ll be happy to help.

How do you attach blackout curtain linings to curtains?

Step 1 Find a flat surface and lay the curtain face down. Place the lining on top of the curtain the correct side up.

Some of our staff members have lots of great advice to share and Glenda from our Hull City Centre branch is no exception! She’s been with Tony’s for over 30 years now and we popped into her branch recently to find out her top interior design tips – here’s what she had to say:

Q: What’s your top piece of interior design advice?

I always advise people to buy their textiles first when redecorating a room. It’s much easier to find bedding, curtains and fabrics first then choose a paint or wallpaper to match.

Q: What are the most common questions you are asked?

We are regularly asked about the sizes of curtains and nets people should buy and also which fabrics are washable. A lot of people ask for advice on quilt togs too, as they want to know which are best for the different seasons – our advice is simple, the higher the tog, the thicker and warmer the quilt. Some people like to be warm in bed, others cool so it’s best to think about that before purchasing.

Q: How do you make your home cosy in winter?

I always like to be cosy and warm in bed so I change my sheets from polycotton to flannelette and change my quilt to a higher tog. I also change my curtains to a thicker fabric – even though my windows are double-glazed! Other ways to create that cosy feel in winter is to incorporate more rugs and door curtains throughout your home. In fact, door curtains are very popular during winter.

Q: Which Tony’s products do you have in your home?

I have allsorts! I have towels, bedding, curtains, a rug, cushion covers, pillows and a mattress topper. I prefer microfiber pillows – they are really comfy and help to support my neck well. I have even made a bolster cushion out of microfiber filling – I love being creative and making my own accessories from time to time.

Q: If you were buying a Christmas gift for someone’s home, what would you buy?

I’d buy them something practical that you know they will use such as sheets or tea towels. Unless you know the person really well it can be tricky second-guessing someone’s personal style when it comes to ornaments and pictures.

Q: When do you start decorating your home for Christmas?

I don’t like to put the tree up too early so I try to do it about two weeks before the big day!

Q: What’s the most important thing to remember when hanging curtains?

Never hang them until you are 100% confident that they are what you want and they are the right size. You should also remember to tie-off the string ends before you pull them to create gather. Don’t panic if you forget, the strings can be threaded back through but it may take you a while!

Q: What’s your favourite colour for decorating at the moment?

I love red at the moment and it’s a great accent colour to brighten up a room. If you want to change the colour of a room my top tip is to keep walls neutral and add a splash of colour using rugs, cushion covers, curtains and throws. That way, it’s really easy to change your colour scheme when you fancy something different.

Q: Which products do you think every home should have?

I think it depends upon personal taste, but comfy bed sheets to suit the season are top of my list. Also, if you have kids, it’s a great idea to invest in blackout blinds to keep their rooms darker for longer during the summer.

Q: Which products are popular at the moment?

Quilt covers are popular at the moment because people are upgrading to a thicker, warmer quilt. Net curtains are also flying out of the door as many people like to update their nets before Christmas.

Meet Jacqueline Woodall, a loyal member of the Tony’s team who’s been with us for 19 years! This lady really knows her stuff when it comes to textiles – here’s what Jacqueline had to say when we caught up with her for a quick chat.

Q: What do you love about working at Tony’s Textiles?

A: It’s such a lovely place to work; the customers are so friendly so it’s great to get chatting to them! I really believe in the products too and it’s great to be selling products that you like. The Tony’s team are fantastic – we’re always going on social outings like Zumba – which is such a laugh!

Q: What are your top pieces of interior design advice at the moment?

A: When it comes to interior design, the most important thing is to ensure the colours you’re using suit what kind of look you want to achieve. If you are after a style that’s contemporary, you’d want to go for neutral tones with splashes of aubergine and teal – this is very on trend at the moment. For a more traditional look, I’d recommend using brigade colours that are timeless and will last for years.

Q: Which Tony’s products do you have in your home?

A: I don’t buy my home accessories from anywhere else! I particularly love the throws and cushions at Tony’s Textiles. I have different sets that I use for summer and winter. I tend to go for lighter materials such as cotton in summer and opt for luxurious furs over the winter period to make a room feel really warm.

Q: What are the most common questions that you get asked in-store?

A: You’d be amazed at the amounts of people that come in our shops to buy curtains that haven’t measured their windows and it’s very common for people to ask us about sizes of curtains. We always recommend that you measure the drop and width of your window before you purchase to avoid making any mistakes. Once you have your measurements we can point you in the right direction.

Q: What’s the most important thing to remember when hanging curtains?

A: There’s nothing worse than unsightly creases in curtains – be sure to make sure that the curtain is well pressed before you fit it (check the care label first for instructions). You should also make sure that the length is correct and that it doesn’t cover up your radiator as this will trap the heat inside the curtains and it will not reach the rest of the room.

Q: What are your home essentials?

A: I feel that the most important thing a home should be is warm so I class essentials as rugs and throws – these can make a home feel really cosy and homely, especially over Christmas time with a roaring fire.

Q: How do you make your home more cosy in Winter?

A: It’s surprising how many people ask me that, it seems everybody is after getting their homes nice and cosy this winter. I’d always recommend incorporating rich, luxurious colours into your décor – you could accessorise with throws and cushions because adding some darker tones can help to draw a room in.

Q: If you were buying Christmas gifts for someone’s home, what would you buy?

A: Towels are always a good shout as they come in a standard size so you don’t have to snoop around their home measuring up their windows to buy them curtains for Christmas! A lot of customers who pop in the shop buy fleecy bathrobes and throws (maybe with matching cushions too if they’ve been on the nice list!) as gifts for Christmas.

Q: When do you start decorating your home for Christmas?
