As the seasons change and summer is well and truly over, it's time to look forward to seeing what autumn and winter bring. This time of year is always full of events and parties with Halloween, Bonfire Night and, of course, Christmas. But the weather often doesn't play nice and there is nothing better than curling up in your warm house on an evening instead.

However, it also means your energy bills go up, but the budget doesn't quite stretch to having the heating on 24/7. A lot of people also love to inject a bit of each season into their home but a complete redecoration of the whole house four times a year is just not possible.

So, how do you get your bedroom ready for winter?

We've put together some budget-friendly tips for your bedroom to ensure that it is warm, cosy and ready. The bedroom is the place where you spend most time relaxing, and is also the easiest room to overhaul on a budget with a variety of textiles that will suit any style of home and any taste.

Here are our favourite ways to get your bedroom winter ready...

1) Get A Seasonal Duvet Cover

Nothing makes you feel more snug or have a better night's sleep than having fresh bedding – it's scientifically proven (maybe!). A crisp new duvet cover is the perfect way to make your bed cosy and a seasonal print will transform your room and get you excited for winter and Christmas.

A duvet cover like the Noel Red & Cream Christmas Duvet is perfect in the run up to Christmas, or if you want something that you can get on your bed straight away, try something like the Nordic Quilt Duvet Cover which will see you right through the season.

2) Use Blackout Curtains

It can be hard to sleep when the bright morning sun is coming through your window at this time of the year, and even worse if you're a shift worker who needs to sleep through the day. Blackout curtains are ideal for keeping the room dark, but are also a fantastic way to keep your room warm as they are a lot thicker than normal curtains. If you love the curtains you have now, you can get blackout lining that can be attached easily to your curtain which gives the same effect.

3) Seek Out Any Draughts

Just the smallest of draughts can cause your room to be cold even when the heating is on, and if a gap is big enough, you're also losing a lot of heat out of it.

The worst offenders are gaps under doors and windows that don't shut properly. These can be easily be covered with a draught excluder; you can either buy one from a shop or make one using an old pillowcase stuffed with tights, socks or old clothes. You can buy self-adhesive foam strips to stop draughts coming from windows too. If you can't quite pinpoint where the draught is coming from, walk around the room slowly with a candle and you'll notice the flame flicker.

4) Make Your Bed Cosy With Throws & Cushions

Putting extra throws and cushions on your bed will ensure you keep even warmer and cosier, plus they will make your bed look well dressed and inviting when it's not in use. Adding throws and colours in floral or vintage prints is a great way of adding style and colour to a plain room if you want a new look without actually decorating.

5) Decorate With Candles and Fairy Lights

Having small decorations like candles and fairy lights around the room can make it feel warmer and cosier even if they are not letting off any heat. They also make your room look pretty and homely and different candles will make your room smell amazing. Pick a new candle scent and every time you smell it, it will remind you of different memories and times in your life, or pick a seasonal scent such as spiced apple or cinnamon to really get you in the mood for Christmas.
