Some of our staff members have lots of great advice to share and Glenda from our Hull City Centre branch is no exception! She’s been with Tony’s for over 30 years now and we popped into her branch recently to find out her top interior design tips – here’s what she had to say:
Q: What’s your top piece of interior design advice?
I always advise people to buy their textiles first when redecorating a room. It’s much easier to find bedding, curtains and fabrics first then choose a paint or wallpaper to match.
Q: What are the most common questions you are asked?
We are regularly asked about the sizes of curtains and nets people should buy and also which fabrics are washable. A lot of people ask for advice on quilt togs too, as they want to know which are best for the different seasons – our advice is simple, the higher the tog, the thicker and warmer the quilt. Some people like to be warm in bed, others cool so it’s best to think about that before purchasing.
Q: How do you make your home cosy in winter?
I always like to be cosy and warm in bed so I change my sheets from polycotton to flannelette and change my quilt to a higher tog. I also change my curtains to a thicker fabric – even though my windows are double-glazed! Other ways to create that cosy feel in winter is to incorporate more rugs and door curtains throughout your home. In fact, door curtains are very popular during winter.
Q: Which Tony’s products do you have in your home?
I have allsorts! I have towels, bedding, curtains, a rug, cushion covers, pillows and a mattress topper. I prefer microfiber pillows – they are really comfy and help to support my neck well. I have even made a bolster cushion out of microfiber filling – I love being creative and making my own accessories from time to time.
Q: If you were buying a Christmas gift for someone’s home, what would you buy?
I’d buy them something practical that you know they will use such as sheets or tea towels. Unless you know the person really well it can be tricky second-guessing someone’s personal style when it comes to ornaments and pictures.
Q: When do you start decorating your home for Christmas?
I don’t like to put the tree up too early so I try to do it about two weeks before the big day!
Q: What’s the most important thing to remember when hanging curtains?
Never hang them until you are 100% confident that they are what you want and they are the right size. You should also remember to tie-off the string ends before you pull them to create gather. Don’t panic if you forget, the strings can be threaded back through but it may take you a while!
Q: What’s your favourite colour for decorating at the moment?
I love red at the moment and it’s a great accent colour to brighten up a room. If you want to change the colour of a room my top tip is to keep walls neutral and add a splash of colour using rugs, cushion covers, curtains and throws. That way, it’s really easy to change your colour scheme when you fancy something different.
Q: Which products do you think every home should have?
I think it depends upon personal taste, but comfy bed sheets to suit the season are top of my list. Also, if you have kids, it’s a great idea to invest in blackout blinds to keep their rooms darker for longer during the summer.
Q: Which products are popular at the moment?
Quilt covers are popular at the moment because people are upgrading to a thicker, warmer quilt. Net curtains are also flying out of the door as many people like to update their nets before Christmas.
