How to prepare your home for winter

Summer will soon be coming to an end and it’s time to start thinking about adding soft furnishings to your home in preparation for the colder months. Although we still have some summery days ahead of us for this year (fingers crossed), it’s never too early to start getting ready for the cold snap.

One of the best ways to stay warm in the run up to winter is by adding soft furnishings to your home. You’ll start to notice that the temperature will drop very soon and the chilly weather will kick in.

Preparing your home for winter doesn’t have to be a huge task. You don’t have to go the whole hog just yet, but introducing some essential cold-weather soft furnishings into your home will help you to keep warm when the weather starts to turn. You might even find that you save money on energy expenses as you won’t have to turn the central heating on so soon. Using soft furnishings to keep you warm is a better idea than resorting to switching on that heating before it’s absolutely essential!

We recommend buying plenty of throws and blankets for your home at this time of year. They’re perfect to use if you’re having a cosy night in front of the TV or to give to your guests if you’re hosting a BBQ and the weather turns a bit nippy. See our range of throws and blankets here.

Switch your summer duvet to one with a higher tog to make sure you don’t get cold throughout the night and disturb your sleeping pattern. Summer nights can be hot and sticky so you don’t need much thickness in your duvet at all. But when the temperature drops, you’ll need a higher tog to keep you warm. Take a look at our duvet collection here.

Add thicker curtains to your windows – this will help to reduce the drafts that come through your windows and keep the warm air in your home from escaping. That extra barrier makes a big difference and will reduce the need to switch on the central heating. Head over to our website to see our collection of curtains. Steer clear of curtains made out of voile and thin materials as they’re more appropriate for summer months.

We have a fantastic new range of luxury thermal blackout curtains that will work well at retaining heat when the colder weather kicks in! View our range of blackout curtains here.

These small changes to your home can make a big difference when it starts to get chilly and end up saving you money in the long run. Let us know how you use soft furnishings in your home to cope with the temperature changes.
